DALLAS – An enormous crowd was on hand at the Gas Monkey Bar and Grill for a Friday the 13th hip-hop show featuring famed musicians Homeboy Sandman and Aesop Rock with Rob Sonic and DJ Abilities. Hundreds braved the chilly inclement weather to groove to the beats and rhymes of the four artists who took to the stage. The show itself got off to a late start and as such the ticketholders were noticeably antsy. The palpable apprehension quickly gave way, however, and the atmosphere lightened when the opening act took to the stage.
Straight out of Queens, Homeboy Sandman performed his unique brand of east coast rap and was an instant hit with the audience. Sandman’s transcendent lyrics overlaid with strong driving beats immediately brought upon a cohesion among the patrons. His powerful set helped pull the house together.
Next up on the Maverick Harley Davidson stage, Aesop Rock, Rob Sonic and DJ Abilities. All three are accomplished musicians in their own right. From their precise execution of songs and commanding stage presence, it was evident that all three were extremely talented artists. Aesop, Sonic and Abilities served to complement each other perfectly and performed with such solidarity that one would think they were a “group” rather than individual musicians sitting in together. Listening to the combined sounds of the trio and witnessing the effect on the House was impressive, to say the least.
The entire show was spectacular and inspiring and as far as Hip-Hop performances go. The mood among the entire House was jovial and friendly as the lively audience danced themselves into a frenzy while echoing back their favorite lyrics to the stage. The marriage of excellent acoustics and adept musicians provided for a truly extraordinary experience.
