How do you choose an autofocus mode and focus area?
Choose autofocus behavior according to whether the subject's distance is staying fixed or changing, then choose an autofocus area that helps the camera select your intended subject. These are separate settings: continuous focusing does not automatically identify the right subject, and a single focus point does not necessarily lock focus. Check your camera and lens manuals for exact names, activation controls and restrictions. Practise from a stationary, safe position, away from traffic and intense light sources.
This guide concerns still photographs. Its named examples come from the Canon EOS R6 Mark II and Nikon Z6III online manuals, consulted in September 2026. They illustrate the distinction; they are not instructions for every Canon or Nikon model. Check the documentation that matches your camera's firmware.
What does the focus mode control?
The focus mode determines how focusing behaves after you activate it. For a first distinction, ask whether the camera should acquire focus once or continue adjusting.
Canon's EOS R6 Mark II manual describes One-Shot AF for still subjects: under the documented shutter-half-press operation, it focuses once and holds focus while that half-press is maintained. Servo AF keeps focusing while the shutter button remains half-pressed and is intended for moving subjects. Canon also cautions that Servo operation does not guarantee an in-focus photograph. Nikon's Z6III uses AF-S, labeled Single AF, and AF-C, labeled Continuous AF, for the corresponding still-subject and changing-distance choices. These names describe behavior, not which part of the frame you selected. See the Z6III focus reference.
Do not confuse single autofocus with single-frame shooting. One concerns focus behavior; the other concerns how photographs are released. Likewise, continuous autofocus is not a guarantee that a burst will contain only sharp frames.
What does the autofocus area control?
The area setting determines how the camera selects the focusing location. A small photographer-positioned point and a broad automatic area give the system different selection boundaries.
On the EOS R6 Mark II, Canon describes 1-point AF as focusing with one AF point, while Whole area AF uses automatic selection across a larger area. Canon's AF-area manual page also explains interactions with subject detection and tracking.
For a stationary object with a distracting background, a deliberately placed point is a useful starting choice. For a subject that is difficult to keep under that point, a larger area may be more practical. This is a selection trade-off, not a ranking in which the smallest point is always most accurate.
A wide area does not mean every distance becomes sharp. It gives the camera more locations from which to select. Depth of field is a separate consideration, explained in the exposure triangle guide.
How do the two decisions fit together?
Use this as an editorial starting matrix, then check which combinations your camera supports:

The last column is a question because camera behavior varies. A named tracking mode, a zone and an automatic area are not interchangeable across models.
The Nikon Z6III manual, for example, makes 3D-tracking available for still photographs with AF-C, while its Subject-tracking AF option is for video. That is a model-specific distinction from the same focus reference, not a naming rule for all cameras.
Do not copy an entire sports or wildlife setup merely because one label matches your menu. Start by identifying the subject and the kind of movement.
Why might half-pressing the shutter do nothing?
Autofocus activation is another setting. A camera may be configured to focus with the shutter button, an AF-ON button or an assigned control.
For the Nikon Z6III, Custom Setting a6: AF activation distinguishes Shutter/AF-ON from AF-ON only. Nikon explicitly states that the latter does not focus when the shutter-release button is half-pressed. See Nikon's activation reference.
Before declaring autofocus faulty, establish which control currently starts it. This matters especially with borrowed equipment or saved custom settings.
Write down the existing arrangement before changing it. Do not reset the whole camera as a first diagnostic step: that would change unrelated exposure, file and control preferences while you are trying to isolate one behavior.
Our suggested setup note is short: camera, lens, firmware, still-photo mode, AF behavior, AF area, subject-detection choice and activation control. It gives you a record of what you actually compared.
What stationary exercise makes area selection visible?
Use two closed books with visibly different covers, placed securely on a clear table. Put one nearer the camera and the other farther away, with both visible. Avoid balancing objects upright or stacking equipment near an edge.
Use ordinary, comfortable room light or indirect daylight. Do not photograph while walking, and do not aim through the lens at the sun or other intense light sources. Nikon's camera safety instructions explicitly warn against using the camera while walking and against directly viewing bright sources through the lens. Follow your own equipment's complete safety guidance.
This is an original practice exercise, not a calibration procedure or a test we have performed.
- Choose the intended detail. Pick a word or distinct mark on the nearer cover. Make sure it is outside the lens's minimum focusing distance, as specified by its manual.
- Record the setup. Note your focus mode, area, activation control and exposure settings. Keep the camera position, focal length and book positions unchanged during the comparison.
- Make three point-selected frames. Use single autofocus and a photographer-positioned point, if supported. Put the point over the chosen detail. Release and reactivate focus for each frame using the documented control.
- Make three broad-area frames. Change only the area-selection approach to a supported broad automatic area. Keep the other recorded choices unchanged.
- Review the selected detail. Compare the same region at the same playback magnification. Record where the focusing indicator appeared and what detail actually looks sharp.
Three frames plus three frames gives six photographs. Repetition is there to expose variation in this small exercise, not to establish a statistically valid success rate.
If subject detection or tracking can override the selected area, first consult the model's instructions for restricting it. On the EOS R6 Mark II, Canon specifies Whole area tracking Servo AF: Off and Subject to detect: None to restrict AF to the specified area. Apply that information only to the named camera and documented context.
What should the observation sheet record?
Use observations rather than a verdict about the camera. The following entries are hypothetical examples of wording, not results from the exercise:

The fourth row is deliberately an inspection task, not an invented finding. A focusing indicator and the recorded image are different evidence.
If all six photographs look similar, that is not a failed exercise. The books may be too close in distance for the difference to be obvious in this setup, or both selections may have landed where you intended. Record that outcome before altering the arrangement.
Do not change the aperture, move the books and switch the focus mode together. You would no longer know which change explained the result.
What does a missed result tell you?
It tells you to investigate, not immediately to buy another lens or change calibration settings.
If the indicator selected the wrong object, inspect area selection and any subject-detection or tracking behavior. If focusing struggled on a plain cover, choose a clearer detail at the same distance for the next comparison. Canon lists low-contrast surfaces, repetitive patterns and near-and-far subjects within an AF point among difficult focusing conditions.
If the selected location was correct but the photograph still looks soft, review movement and exposure separately. Do not use an AF-mode change as the explanation for every kind of blur.
For portraits, carry this distinction into the window-light practice guide: identify the intended person and detail, confirm the actual selection, and obtain consent for photography and use. An automated eye-detection feature does not determine your intended subject or grant permission.
Return changed settings to your recorded starting arrangement when finished. Keep the exercise photographs until you have compared them. If the behavior remains unexplained, consult the exact manual and manufacturer support before attempting adjustment or repair.
